This year’s hike begins on Monday, August 31, at Glacier Point. I am exiting Yosemite National Park at Isberg Pass and will arrive at Red’s Meadow on Friday, September 4. The 5th is a zero day, the 6th I’ll be on my way to Lake Virginia, and I’ll arrive at Muir Trail Ranch on the 9th.
After a zero day on the 10th it will be all hiking all the time until the 19th, when I intend to summit Mount Whitney.
Dinner (steak and caprese salad) will be at Seasons that night, followed by ice cream. Lots of ice cream.
There will be no blog posts while I’m in the woods. I am going to take a smart phone this time, and I’ll tweet if I have signal.
If you need a JMT fix, may I suggest:
* A little history about every major pass.
* Places to linger on the John Muir Trail.
See you on Tuesday, the 29th of September!
Good hiking, Ray
My wife and I are starting on the JMT on August 30 from Sunrise Lakes TH, with a brief two day detour to climb the Southeast Buttress of Cathedral Peak, guided by rock climbing nephew. Not bad for a 62 year old man! We arrive Red’s Meadow the day you depart, and have a cabin for a true zero day. MTR re-supply is September 12 and Mt Whitney planned for September 22.
Let’s hope the Rough Fire runs it’s course and the current smoke situation and trail closure changes.
Have a great hike.
Sounds like a fabulous adventure, Ken! I am cautiously optimistic regarding the Rough fire. We still have almost 2 weeks. Good luck!
Right on Ray – have fun!
Thanks, Ryan!
Good luck. Assuming the Rough Fire does not smoke us out, I should be a few days behind you (leaving TM 9/7).
Walk on,
Jo Jo
Thanks, Jo Jo!
See you at MTR. My wife (Pat) and I get in (NOBO this yr) on 09/10, with zero day 09/11. We then continue north to Mono Creek drainage, and exit over Mono Pass and Mosquito Flat TH (Rock Creek Canyon). Look for us, and we’ll fill you in on smoke and water south of MTR. We’ve added 3M N95 Particulate Respirator masks to our kit this year (0.5 oz apiece). Be safe; enjoy.
Look forward to meeting you and your wife, Mike. Let’s hope they get the fire out!
My wife and I will watch for you on the trail, leaving from HI on the 1st; Happy Trails!
Good luck, Lee!
Set to start sept 10 nobo from Devils to Hi on 13…back to Devils head sobo sept 14…Mtr sept 17…Whitney sept 23…hope the smoke clears as I’m going to have to push 16-18 mpd….fly home from Reno on 24…any pointers with smoke other than try to avoid, use wet buff over face? Someone recommended afrin…
I am probably going to bring a lightweight mask of some type, but the bottom line is that if the smoke is bad and unlikely to dissapate I am going to bail. It just ruins the whole experience. Good luck!
Bon Voyage, Ray!
Mike Boisvert
Thanks, Mike!
Ray
I saw you posted on yahoo jmt group. Please keep us posted if possible as I start on sept 10…hoping for improvements as don’t think my airline tickets are refundable…good luck and have fun!!
I am also heading NOBO leaving Whitney Portal 9/6. A mask is a great idea. I am optimistic that the fire will be contained soon. See you all on the trail. Great posts Ray! I enjoy reading them and have learned a lot from you.
